Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.
1 John 3:8
The Apostle John, Jesus’s best friend, towards the end of the Bible takes us back to the beginning. Jesus came to destroy the works of the devil, which is in. Jesus was that offspring of Eve identified at the start of history who would come to end history and make all things new.
Think about what this means for you.
First, it means that you must be mindful of sin in your life. Earlier, John wrote, “Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.” All of us practice lawlessness because we are all sinners. Sin is of the devil. But what else does John say? “Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous.”
Practicing righteousness models Jesus. We are all sinners and have all fallen short, but that does not mean we should give up, because Jesus did not give up. We should work each day on our sanctification.
Above all else, we should know that Jesus appeared to destroy sin and one day we will spend eternity with him.
