A Shooting in Australia

Last night, the President said, “We know that other countries, in response to one mass shooting, have been able to craft laws that almost eliminate mass shootings. Friends of ours, allies of ours — Great Britain, Australia, countries like ours. So we know there are ways to prevent it.”

Today there has been a shooting in Australia and policemen are dead.

In the late 90’s Australia, a nation without a second amendment, imposed a new tax and used the money raised to buy back guns from its citizens while also greatly restricting gun ownership. The best study on the effects of the law show a very real impact on suicide rates in Australia, but “weaker” evidence on its impact on homicides.

When the President says he wants laws like Australia to prevent shootings, what he is talking about are gun confiscations. That is what Australia did. And even the liberal Washington Post has to acknowledge the most pro-gun confiscation study in Australia showed only “weak” evidence that it affected the homicide rate in Australia.
