There Goes Mitch McConnell’s Talking Point

For the last week, Mitch McConnell has pushed a single talking point against defunding Planned Parenthood. He was saying repeatedly that no pro-life group thought it worth the risk of a government shutdown. Well, Chuck Donovan just blew up that talking point.

Donovan is President of the Charlotte Lozier Institute, which is the research arm of the Susan B. Anthony List. That’s important because SBA is one of the groups that Mitch McConnell has been pointing to as willing to keep the funding going to Planned Parenthood in order to avoid a government shutdown.

That’s not true of SBA, but McConnell has been using them as an example anyway.

Additionally, the Alliance Defending Freedom and the Family Research Council, both prominent pro-life groups, have been circulating Chuck Donovan’s piece at National Review. There are two more pro-life groups.

Ultimately, McConnell may only have the National Right to Life Committee on his side — a group that is far more interested in bipartisan street-cred (see e.g. Bart Stupak) and being a GOP team player.

I don’t know that the NRLC is going to stick with McConnell as more and more pro-life groups actually choose defending babies over defending the GOP. One way or the other, this is a significant piece because it gives the lie to McConnell’s talking point.
