The Beginning and the End

T

“Behold, I am coming soon, bringing my recompense with me, to repay each one for what he has done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.”

Rev. 22:12-13

The website BuzzFeed produced a video it is hoping goes viral. The video is entitled “I’m Christian, But I’m Not…” There are a number of problems with it. But the chief problem is that it contains no Jesus and no gospel.

Christianity is not a faith defined by what we are not for, but by what we are for. And we are for Jesus. The beginning and the end of our faith is Jesus. Because we are for Jesus, we are against the world. Because we are for Jesus, we are against sin, including our own sin from which we seek repentance.

Leontyne Price sings my favorite Christmas song: “Ride on King Jesus.” I play it on repeat at Christmas. The lyrics contain this line:

For He is King of kings / He is Lord of lords / Jesus Christ, the first and the last / No man works like him.

No man does work like Jesus. It is his work, not ours, that draws us to God. He is the arbiter of our faith. He is the first word and the last word. Christians are today defined so much by what they are against, because the world itself stands for everything and death at the same time. Christianity stands for life. We stand for Jesus. He is the beginning and the end, the Alpha and the Omega. And every mouth should proclaim his gospel truth that whoever believes in him shall have eternal life.

Christians who define themselves by their sexual orientation, their sins, or put themselves on a pedestal proclaiming they are right with the prevailing age, will be called to account, just as all the rest of us will be called to account.

Jesus is coming soon “to repay each one for what he has done.” We should all tremble at the thought.
