All of the Republican Presidential candidates, from Chris Christie to Ted Cruz to Donald Trump to Jeb Bush, have been in lockstep on the issue of Planned Parenthood.
They have all supported full defunding of Planned Parenthood. Donald Trump and Ted Cruz, in fact, were two of the early leaders on shutting down the government to completely defund Planned Parenthood.
The business case is hard to argue with. Supporters of Planned Parenthood say that no federal dollars go to funding abortions at Planned Parenthood. But because federal dollars flow into Planned Parenthood for other services, Planned Parenthood is then able to free up resources to fund abortions itself. Cutting off federal dollars decreases the amount of money that Planned Parenthood can budget for abortions.
Most of the Presidential candidates have argued that. All of them support defunding Planned Parenthood even if it means the Democrats shut down the government. Mike Huckabee argues that the debt ceiling is the vehicle by which to defund Planned Parenthood, but all of the candidates have stood shoulder to shoulder in supporting fully defunding Planned Parenthood.
No longer. One of the Presidential candidates has reversed himself. Live on television, he has now come out and said federal dollars should flow to Planned Parenthood. It is really surprising considering how forcefully he had argued for full defunding. It is even more surprising he would now come out with federal funding for Planned Parenthood since many of his supporters finally solidified with him after he announced that position.
The reversal, live on television, is catching his supporters off guard and leaving egg on their faces. Over at RedState, Dan McLaughlin has details on the surprising reversal of this one Republican Presidential candidate and the egg now on the faces of his supporters, many of whom waited for him to establish his pro-life credibility before supporting him.
