God Over Country

G

But our citizenship is in heaven, and from it we await a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body to be like his glorious body, by the power that enables him even to subject all things to himself.

Philippians 3:20-21 (ESV)

Are you an American first or a Christian first? The answer should be that you are a Christian first. There is no American Jesus, just Jesus. He calls us to reorder our lives by putting him first. We may be citizens of the greatest country the world has known, but there is a country still greater that the world will know and we are already citizens.

So put Jesus first. View your neighbors, regardless of who they are or where they are from, as potential citizens of eternity with you. They are your brothers and sisters also made in the image of God. When the world overwhelms you or when you feel yourself anxious about the direction you are headed, remember the direction you really are headed — home. Our citizenship is in Heaven. Make that your land and make your country not your idol.

As Russell Moore has said, to be a better American, be a better Christian. Work on your walk with Jesus and you’ll find you see your walk through the world more clearly.
