Apples to Oranges

A
[W]ork out your own salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure.

Philippians 2:12-13

I heard my seminary professor mention this passage recently. We so often take this to mean we have to work on our salvation ourselves. But we forget “it is God who works in” us.

We make an apple to oranges comparison. 100% of our energy invested in our own salvation is in no way equal to 100% of God’s energy invested in our salvation. What is our energy compared to God’s? Nothing.

So work out your own salvation with fear and trembling because God is working in you. Know that God is in you. You are not alone in your journey, in your sanctification, or in your salvation.

Your salvation is not a private journey and you are not working alone.
