A Commandment to be Happy

17 “You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.”
Exodus 20:17 (ESV)

This commandment is a commandment to be happy. Coveting creates wants and unfulfilled desires that leave you longing for what someone else has. This is a commandment to stop keeping up with the Joneses, but appreciate what you have now.

God has provided for you all those things you need in life. God loves you and wants you to be happy. He knows that as long as you have your eye on your neighbor’s stuff that you will not be happy. So focus on what you have. Look at all your blessings. Look how God has taken care of you.

It is not easy to do sometimes. But God knows what we need and he also knows our hearts. He protects us sometimes from the things we really want because he knows how those things would destroy us.

We can take none of it with us. So God commands us to be happy. We do that by focusing on him and not on stuff.
