Nancy Pelosi: Tool

This Washington Post editorial sums it up rather nicely.

HOUSE SPEAKER Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) offered an excellent demonstration yesterday of why members of Congress should not attempt to supplant the secretary of state when traveling abroad. After a meeting with Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad in Damascus, Ms. Pelosi announced that she had delivered a message from Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert that “Israel was ready to engage in peace talks” with Syria. What’s more, she added, Mr. Assad was ready to “resume the peace process” as well. Having announced this seeming diplomatic breakthrough, Ms. Pelosi suggested that her Kissingerian shuttle diplomacy was just getting started. “We expressed our interest in using our good offices in promoting peace between Israel and Syria,” she said.

Only one problem: The Israeli prime minister entrusted Ms. Pelosi with no such message.

Not since Ted Kennedy conspired with the Soviet Union to subvert American foreign policy has a member of Congress engaged one of our enemies to undermine our position in the world.

  • Woooops I see it. That was a typo it should have read “shut up”. While not exactly polite I was using it as an idiom. Feel free to change the “i” to a “u”.

  • You keep saying that it’s illegal for the leader of the body of government responsible for making treaties to tell other nations that we are open to disusing international issues.

I say it is not illegal under the Logan act for the Speak of the House of Representatives to speak with, but not negotiate privately with, foreign leaders.

Prove me wrong. Put up or shit up. Charge her or call the whaaaaambulance already.

And unless Hastert was sent by Clinton as a direct envoy then he was in fact acting on his own and may have deviated from the Clinton policy. In any case if he was not a direct envoy then under your interpretation of the Logan act he had no business what so ever in talking to any foreign leader.

  • Nancy Pelosi is the Speaker of the House, and she should be given the same freedom to speak to foreign leaders as was Dennis Hassert.

Uh, Linda, Denny Hastert never attempted to deviate from President Clinton’s foreign policy agenda.

Pelosi, on the other hand, made an ass of herself on the Israel matter, and informed Syria and she and Congress were open to negotiating with Syria in direct contravention of American foreign policy. In addition to being illegal under the Logan Act, it sends mixed signals to a country that has conspired with our terrorist enemies.

  • “America is a nation with a mission, and that mission comes from our most basic beliefs. We have no desire to dominate, no ambitions of empire. Our aim is a democratic peace — a peace founded upon the dignity and rights of every man and woman. America acts in this cause with friends and allies at our side, yet we understand our special calling: This great republic will lead the cause of freedom.”

The above is a quote from President Bush’s State of the Union Adress in January 2004. Note the words that give rights to all men and women of America, not from the President but from our Creator that helped those that framed our Constitution to find just the right words. Now, we have these writers that refuse to give up their false beliefs that only the neocons may exercise the First Amendment. It is important to note that one of the freed British hostages captured by Iranians told a reporter just today that “Iran is not our enemy.” And you know what, Iran is not our enemy either and neither is Syria.

I have noticed that the GOP has been so twisted that now it seems that the only conservative principle that the southern GOP is holding onto is being against abortion. I have an employee that would never vote for a Democrat for any political office but believes firmly in a woman’s right to choose. This lady and myself differ on the Terry Schiavo case, as I wanted her life to be saved.

It seems that the GOP has lost its way very badly, and the only way to beat those left wingers is for all God fearing Americans to band together and vote together. That should give a sweep in every state. If only we could have journalists that could be honest and tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth. What a novel concept.

We were lied to about WMD, and then told the war is just because it was a good thing to remove a tryant such as Sadam from Iraq and give democracy to the people. What about our democracy here? The way I see it is that about 10% of our population is trying to bully us into submission, into surrending our basic human rights and into allowing tyrants to rule our lives!

Nancy Pelosi is the Speaker of the House, and she should be given the same freedom to speak to foreign leaders as was Dennis Hassert. The neocons have lost big time, and it is time for the rest of those still drinking the neocon kool aid to wake up, and regroup with those Americans that want our Country back from empire building where we do not belong.

  • Sorry for the multiple post. I am at work, and my ISP must have looked like spam. It did not go through and I typed again.

  • Nancy Pelosi is doing the work that needs to be done, as is Jimmy Carter because the party that is in power right now cannot do it. The Republicans in power cannot show their hand at the poker table. It is time that we made peace with Syria and Iran because the Middle East cannot be in turmoil forever or we will go down the tubes fast. We cannot survive without the oil from Iran, unless we want to start walking. You can take this fact to the bank that Nancy Pelosi did not go to Syria without the behind the scenes blessings from President Bush.

  • Actually FAP, you are so right. I am glad that someone has enough since to talk to Syria like Nancy Pelosi did. The news is not reporting that Saudi Arabia is telling Israel that they must go back to the 1967 peace agreement and give up the land that was taken since then, such as the Golan Heights in Syria. And the Saudi’s mean what they say. As a matter of fact, the Saudi’s have contracted with General Dynamics for about $4.5 billion in defense spending so they are not playing with spit balls.

It is so fine when our politicians take politic junkets to Israel and no one says a word do they? We have got to have peace and stability in the world, and Jimmy Carter and Nancy Pelosi are doing the work that needs to be done to get a peaceful dialogue going. And trust me, those in the Republican Party behind the scenes agree with it-they are just not showing their hand at the poker table. But most do not understand the game.

  • I saw a post on Redstate today that is very close to where I am right now.

I look at RS every few days hoping that it will go beyond the run of the mill echo chamber it has sadly evolved into and today I was rewarded. This post is not a ra-ra republicans can do no wrong – dems can do no right post which is all too often what redstate offers. It offers some real introspection and honest criticisms of the party. Anyone who doesn’t think it’s time for such thinking will never understand why we’re in the minority now.

Kudos to Redstate. I just hope this guy doesn’t get tarred and feathered for his post.

  • I’m glad republicans would never be a part of something like this. Talking to people that oppose us, how does that help anything.

When they get back they should be made to write “Bush is the Decider” 100 times on the blackboard.
