What Do We Do With Totalitarian Islam?

My good friend Paul Cella has a great piece up at TechCentralStation. I encourage you to read it. It is certainly thought provoking.

By now, every free nation in the world still possessed of its senses knows it must face this self-interrogation: Are we or are we not going permit (or perhaps continue to permit) the emergence, within our midst, of totalitarian Islam? Again I deliberately leave open the question of whether “totalitarian Islam” really means “Islam in the modern world” or merely “a perversion of Islam in the modern world.” But to repeat: The people of the free nations of the world, the citizens of the West (or her descendents if in fact the West is no more), are now confronted with sufficient evidence that the efforts to call totalitarian Islam into existence in every free nation are well underway; that such efforts will be materially supported from the home bases of totalitarian Islam, and may be spiritually supported by the very nature of Islam as such*; and that those efforts can, at least to some degree, be encouraged or discouraged by the actions of our own governments.

The instinct of most of us is not even to face the question, to decline the self-interrogation altogether, and get on with our barbeques and reality shows; but face it we must, because ultimately the threat it signifies is neither fleeting nor mild, but rather persistent and existential.

  • Sajjad

    1) There are a lot of countries on the map that are in the west, there are some shared values, similar forms of government, but, actually, there is no collective ‘West’ in terms of – say – foreign policy or otherwise.

    2) You present the ‘Muslim World’ as if there are no schisms within Islam, as if the ‘Muslims’ means a single people in universal accord. This is not the case, as you well know. The violence in Iraq is largely Muslim on Muslim. Saddam’s violence was so considerable that a million plus Muslims died because he held power. This is relevant, Sajjad, because you can’t make claims of the sort you do without accommodating – well – ‘reason’.

    3) If the Muslim world is in a big hurry to get bigger and poorer, that will make it even more weak and divided than it is today. What this has to do with wielding influence over the planet, I’m not sure. But perhaps there will be less hypocrisy in the Muslim World and you will rid your homes and societies of – I don’t know – cars, fridges, televisions, computers, and the other fruits of apostate thought? Just to be consistent, Sajjad.

In terms of the ‘West’ Muslim population growth is a non-issue because states will reflect voter concerns and simply legislate accordingly.

  • More On Radical Islam and Terror

Are we or are we not going permit (or perhaps continue to permit) the emergence, within our midst, of totalitarian Islam?

That’s the question raised by Paul Cella in this excellent piece at Tech Central Station (hat tip to Erick-Woods Erickson). I…

  • How Muslims should address the war on terror.

We, as Muslims, know that the motivation for any so-called Jihadist activities is not a “hatred for freedom,” but rather a reaction to foreign policies and the encroachment of the West on Islamic world. Is the violence justified? No. Is the violence the best reaction to the policies? No. Does the West want the violent reactions? Yes. Why? So the West can continue its encroachment on the lives of Muslims everywhere. What should Muslims do about it? Muslims in the world should drop the resistance and anger against the West. The greatest fear of policymakers in the West is not the violence; the violence can be quelled, but rather the explosive growth potential in the population of the Muslim World. Muslim nations have the youngest average age of all nations in the world, and therefore the greatest potential for population growth. This is what drives fear in the West and why it reacts with such hatred; the world through demographic change will become more Islamic by default. With the West bringing the war to the Islamic world and killing thousands of Muslims today, the West is actually killing hundreds of thousands if not millions of Muslims a few generations from now. This is at the heart of the West’s war on terror agenda. The West must slow the growth of the world Islamic population. If there really is a war between the West and Islam right now, it will not be won or lost with guns, but rather birth rates. Demography is destiny. Muslims will only survive by living peacefully as the Quran teaches, and focusing on the growth and stability of the family as they have done for many generations.
